Rector - Thomas Blundell Hollinshead Blundell (1834-1905)

Canon Blundell (MHP1-FLL) was the chairman of the first Halsall Parish Council, and the only non-farmer on the council. He was born in 1834 in West Derby, Liverpool to Jane Leigh and Richard Benson Hollinshead Blundell, a colliery owner who was described as a merchant in the census records. Canon Blundell was a pupil at Eton College and began Oxford University on 3rd June 1852 where he obtained a Bachelor of Arts & Masters degrees by 1860. In 1861, he was head of the household at White Hall, Handsworth in Staffordshire. His mother was living with him as was his brother, Richard, and 6 house servants. Thomas was working as a curate at St. Mary’s Church in Handsworth. 

 

On 11th August 1863, Thomas Blundell became the Rector of Halsall Church, he was made a Canon in 1884 and the Rural Dean of Ormskirk in 1887. His wife, Adelaide Fanny Ashworth Astley who he married in September 1865 in Tonbridge, Kent died in 1900 which left just him and his daughter Ethel Hilda Blundell living at the Rectory with 7 servants. 

 

On 1 November 1905, Canon Thomas Blundell died in hospital in Middlesex. He was buried in Halsall Churchyard. Probate states that his effects totalled £104, 524 11s 2d – which, according to the Bank of England inflation calculator, is the equivalent to £10,445, 559.26 today.
