Abraham Knowles (1861- 1934)

Abraham Knowles KJGM-11S ran the Saracen’s Head after Robert Jones, from approximately 1901 to 1905. Abraham was born in Scarisbrick in 1861 to James Knowles and Mary Johnson. His father was a wheelwright as was Abraham. The census records for 1881, 1891 and 1901 list Abraham as living on Bangor’s Green Lane (now Summerwood Lane) and working as a wheelwright. He married Mary Shaw 9JN9-QYF, the daughter of Thomas and Ellen Shaw (the grocers on Bangor’s Green Lane).
In July 1905, an article appeared in the Ormskirk Advertiser, stating the following:
Mr. A. Dickinson applied on behalf of William Littlewood for a protection order to sell at the Saracen’s Head, lately kept by Abraham Knowles, until the next transfer day. The applicant had taken the licence on a quarterly tenancy. Mr. Dickinson said the previous tenant was giving up the business after having held the licence for 4 years. Mr. Knowles said he was tired of the business and was a cripple as well. The application was granted.
The family moved to live in Aintree, but in 1917, tragedy struck as their son, Thomas was killed in WW1.
Abraham Knowles passed away on 11th October 1934 in Liverpool. He is buried with his wife Mary and 4 of their children in St. Cuthbert’s graveyard, Halsall.
