Henry Bennett (1851-1915)

Henry Bennett GXCV-GF8 was the second husband of Margery Littlewood. They ran the Saracen’s Head together for approximately two years, 1911-1913.

Henry was the illegitimate son of Ann Bennet. He was born in Upholland in 1851 and lived with his grandparents. In 1860, his mother Ann and her new husband had a double wedding with her sister Alice and her husband at Upholland Church.

After this marriage however, Henry continued to live with his grandparents. He worked as a coal miner initially. He married his first wife Catherine Fox in 1871 and by 1881 they were living and working at the Tawd Bridge Hotel in Upholland. His first wife died in 1906 – Henry continued to work as the innkeeper of the Tawd Bridge until 1911. It was then that he married Margery Littlewood (nee Neale) and moved to Halsall to join her in running the Saracen’s Head. Henry passed away in 1915, 2 years after his second wife had died.
