1854 Mannex Trade Directory
The Topography and Directory of Mid Lancashire by Mannex and Co. 1854 is useful in that it provides details concerning the history of Halsall and its Parish as well as a directory of businesses & people. The directory contains 69 names, occupations and addresses, 51 of which are listed as farmers! The remaining 18 include teachers, tradesmen, a brewer, shopkeepers, and victuallers. The 1851 census for Halsall has its own unique way of naming some of Halsall’s roads. Much depended on the enumerator and his knowledge of the area and/or how the locals referred to the lanes. The names of many roads in Halsall have changed over the years in any case. Some points to note regarding the roads in the 1850s in relation to the census & Mannex & Co. Directory, are:
Village = centre of Halsall. Mordaunt Arms = Saracen’s Head (after Charles Mordaunt owner Halsall Hall and Cotton Mill)
Renacres = Shirdley Hill area Ormskirk Road = Asmall Lane
Holt Lane = Plumpton Lane Plex Lane = Plex Lane & Plex Moss Lane
Charlotte’s Hill = Shirdley Hill? Bangor’s Green = Bangor’s Green & Summerwood Lane
Moss Lane = Carr Moss Lane Cross Lane = Halsall Road
Halsall Moss/Moss = Shirdley Hill Moss, Carr Moss, New Cut Lane and/or Plex Moss Lane
