Land Girl, Lavinia Moorcroft (1920-1990)

Sadly, Lavinia did not get to know her father as he died on 30th October 1920 when she was only 5 months old. This meant her mother, Emma was left with two very young children and a farm to run which as we can see from the 1921 census for Halsall, was exactly the situation.

By 1939, however, Emma, James and Lavinia had moved to Croft Lodge on Carr Moss Lane in Halsall. At this point, Emma was living on private means, James was an apprentice insurance agent and Lavinia was a cash clerk. Also living with the family was newly evacuated Kenneth William Kirkby GP6N-R92 a young school boy from Liverpool.

Lavinia joined the Women’s Land Army on 20th July 1942, when she was 22 years old. A year later, she married William Wells GP6N-QHM (of W. Wells & Sons, Scarisbrick, Lancashire) in the spring of 1943. Her employment with the Women’s
Land Army ended on 10th December 1943.

The couple continued to live and work in the South West Lancashire area. Lavinia died on 26th February 1990, just a year after her husband William had passed away on 11th February. 1989.
