John Kenyon (1887-1978)

John Kenyon Summoned in 1917

John Kenyon GJGH-97N was the son-in-law of Henry Bennett, being married to Evelyn Syrena Bennett.

He was born on 3rd March 1887 in Upholland to Mary and Peter Kenyon, a coal miner – they lived at 67 Ormskirk Road. At 14 years old, John was working as a cattle boy, but he later became a coal miner like his father and brothers.

He married Evelyn Bennett in 1911 and they went on to have 2 children – John and Mabel. John and Evelyn appear to have taken over the running of the Saracen’s Head after the death of Henry Bennett.

John Kenyon was summoned on 8th February 1917 for selling a bottle of beer outside of licensing hours. They were still there when the 1921 census was taken.

However, by 1939 they were living at Webster’s Farm, Spa Lane, Ormskirk and John’s occupation was listed as a farmer. His son, John was a veterinary student at Liverpool University and Mabel was a nursing auxiliary. John (junior) sadly passed away aged 59 years on 2nd October 1976 and his parents both died two years later in 1978 – John was 90 years old and Evelyn was 88.
