Sir Thomas Halsall (c. 1490 - 1539)

Thomas Halsall GY68-MB1 was the oldest son of Sir Henry Halsall GV22-373 and Margaret Stanley L2VJ-WLS, born c.1490.  We also have a biography pages for their 3rd Son, Richard Halsall who was a Rector of St Cuthberts for approximately 50 years from 1513 to 1563.

Thomas married Jane Stanley GGGW-MG7, who was the daughter and co-heir of John Stanley; upon their marriage, she brought Thomas various lands including the manor of Melling. 

 

Thomas and Jane had three known children together: Henry G84B-MUH, their eldest son and Thomas’ heir, Jane KPDY-3K5, who married Gabriel Hesketh and Maud M3CQ-9N4 who married Edward Osbaldeston. (‘History of the County of Lancaster: Volume 3, 1907 , Page 195, Footnote 4) 

  

In addition, Thomas had three known illegitimate sons: Thomas of Barton P4MR-1B9, Gilbert P4MT-FZQ and Cuthbert P4MT-3GG who was probably Reverend Cuthbert Halsall, rector of Halsall from 1563-1571. (‘History of County of Lancaster Volume 3 ‘, 1907, Page 195, Footnote 3)

During his lifetime, Thomas Halsall was knighted at the coronation of King Henry VIII’s ill-fated second wife, Ann Boleyn, which took place at Westminster Abbey in 1533.

As Sir Thomas Halsall, he was made High Sheriff of Lancashire in 1537.

Sir Thomas Halsall died in 1539 and in his will he had made provision for his son and heir Henry (who was only 18 years old at the time) on his marriage – for dower of his own wife and for several annuities as well. He also made provision for his 3 illegitimate sons.
